Design time: 1929
Designer: Mies van der Rohe + Lily Reich
The Barcelona Lounge Chair was designed by the architects Mies van der Rohe and Lily Reich in 1929 to welcome the King and Queen of Spain.
The main body of the
Leather Lounge Chair is supported by an arc-shaped cross-shaped stainless steel frame. The beautiful X-shaped feet are the most eye-catching design of the chair, which is very elegant. This minimalist and functional design is exactly the design concept of "Less is more" advocated by Mies, and it is also the core of the Bauhaus style.
Two rectangular leather pads form the seat (cushion) and the backrest. Each pad is evenly divided into 20 small squares with uneven shapes. The saddle leather belt is used as elastic support under the pad. When you put two cushions on, you don't have to worry about the cushions sliding around, because there are buttons on the four corners of the cushions to fix them to the main body of the frame.
In 1929, Mies designed the German Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exposition, but because the design concept of the building was too unique, there was no suitable furniture to match it, so he had to design a Barcelona chair to welcome the king and queen.
