The Story of Alta Lounge Chair

2024-11-05
The Alta Lounge Chair & Ottoman, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer in 1971, was their first piece of furniture. The elegant metal curves from the base to the back complement the squat seat, giving the furniture a striking sculptural feel.

Oscar Niemeyer once said: I deliberately ignore those correct square buildings, ignore those rationalisms designed with rulers, and embrace the world of curves...I take such an uncooperative attitude towards rationalism because of the environment I live in, those white beaches, towering mountains, ancient Baroque churches and those beautiful women with bronze skin. This sentence is his most famous sentence, which not only describes his work, but also describes his life.
In 1971, he and his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer designed their first piece of furniture, the Alat Lounge Chair. Like his architectural works, the lounge chair demonstrates his preference for "organic curves" and combines the rigor of classic modernism with the free aesthetic and sophistication of post-war Latin American architecture.
