Wassily chair designed by Marcel BREUER of the Bauhaus

Marcel Breuer was one of the first and youngest students to be admitted to the Bauhaus. The Bauhaus was a radical arts and crafts school founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany.

There, the Hungarian-German architect was inspired by the lightness of the first bicycle he bought in his early 20s because of its tubular steel frame, which led him to experiment with bendable materials in furniture design.

His experiments resulted in the Wassily Lounge Chair, a minimalized version of the classic club chair. The straps for the seats, armrests and backrests on a light steel frame are a strong and shiny fabric made from a waxed cotton thread called Eisengarn (iron yarn) invented in the 19th century.
While the rare original was discontinued during World War II, various versions have popped up over the decades, including a leopard-print version from Knoll's 2019 collaboration with Supreme.
The Wassily Leather Lounge Chair was an avant-garde design born under the influence of the modernist trend at that time. It was the world's first steel tube leather chair. It was also called the symbol of the steel tube chair in the 20th century and pioneered the Modern Lounge Chair.
